1,5-Benzodiazepine-2,4-dione is a quaternary ammonium compound used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is an analog of diazepam and has been shown to have antiviral potency. This drug binds to the GABAA receptor and causes a prolonged chloride channel opening. 1,5-Benzodiazepine-2,4-dione has been shown to be cytotoxic in human colon carcinoma cells (HCT116) and human cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa). The cytotoxicity of this drug is due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by interacting with the ribosomes.
