1-Benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine is a piperidine derivative that has an acidic character and is soluble in sodium hydroxide solution. It is an unlabeled chemical that can be synthesized from phenylacetonitrile, thionyl chloride, hydrogen sulfate, and hydroxide solution. 1-Benzyl-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidine reacts with meperidine to form 4-(2'-hydroxyethyl) benzaldehyde methyl ester and 4-(2'-hydroxyethyl) benzaldehyde. The alkali metal salt of the product is then reacted with diethanolamine in the presence of chlorine to produce 1-(benzyloxycarbonyl)methyl piperidinium chloride. This product can also be synthesized by reacting 3,5,6 -trichloropyridine with benzaldehyde methyl ester in the presence of a base such as potassium hyd
