1-Benzylglycerol-2,3-carbonate is an alkali metal cyclic compound. It can be obtained from the reaction of glycerol with benzaldehyde and sodium hydroxide in methanol. 1-Benzylglycerol-2,3-carbonate is a biodegradable compound that can be used to synthesize epoxides and tribromides. It also has catalytic properties, which allow it to catalyze the polymerization of lactide. This compound has been shown to react with amines or hydroxy groups and transfer them across the double bond.
