Description

2-Benzyloxy-1,3-propanediol is a synthetic diol with hydroxyl groups that can be used in the synthesis of fatty acids. It is an intermediate in the acylation of benzyl alcohols and has been used to synthesize β-unsaturated ketones. 2-Benzyloxy-1,3-propanediol has been shown to be a good catalyst for biological reactions and kinetic studies. The reaction mechanism of this compound is not well understood, but it has been proposed that it may be due to its ability to bind two molecules of acetic acid and generate an acetic ester as a product. 2-Benzyloxy-1,3-propanediol is also capable of being immobilized onto a solid support by means of covalent or noncovalent binding methods, which can lead to increased efficiency in chromatographic processes.
