Betaine Aldehyde Chloride (BAC) is an antimicrobial peptide that is capable of either irreversible oxidation or reversible oxidation. It has been shown to have strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and a broad spectrum of Gram-negative bacteria. BAC binds to the sulfhydryl group on cysteine residues, which can lead to inactivation of certain enzymes in the bacterial cell. The molecular docking analysis of BAC with human liver enzyme activities shows that the molecule has high affinity for these enzymes and inhibits their activity. This inhibition leads to decreased fatty acid synthesis and increased resistance to oxidative stress. BAC also inhibits gene expression by binding to DNA at the promoter region, preventing transcriptional initiation. BAC has a pKa of 8, but will be active in acidic environments with a pH below 7.0 due to its ionization process.
