Biotinylcaproylaminoethyl methanethiosulfonate is a biotinylated analog of the amino acid methionine. It has been shown to stabilize serotonin and increase the expression of serotonin transporter (SERT) in cells. Biotinylcaproylaminoethyl methanethiosulfonate has also been shown to inhibit the activity of sodium channels by binding to their termini, which stabilizes them. The effect on sodium channels is reversible with digitonin, a membrane-permeable protein extractant. The inhibition of sodium channels leads to an increase in time constants for depolarization and repolarization, which may lead to depression or anxiety disorders. This compound can be used as a probe for studying neurotransmitter release and uptake mechanisms in neurons.
