Bis(1-pyrenylmethyl) ether is a fluorescent probe that is used to study the effect of polymer concentration on the microenvironment. It has been shown to be a specific ligand for phospholipid membranes, and it can be used as a fluorescence technique in order to study the viscosity of fluids. Bis(1-pyrenylmethyl) ether is also used in magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure the constant for fluidity.
