2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)tetrahydrofuran is a polymerization catalyst for polyethylene terephthalate that has been shown to be effective at low temperatures. It is not active at high temperatures and is stable in acidic and neutral media. 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)tetrahydrofuran can be used as an electrochemical catalyst for the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to formic acid. This reaction has been shown to have a high turnover frequency and to be sustainable because it does not require fossil fuels or heavy metals as reactants. The parameters of this reaction are still being investigated, including the effect of oxidant on the rate of catalysis.
