3,17b-O-Bis(methoxymethyl)estradiol is a synthetic estrogen with a molecular mass of 320. It is used as a reference compound in the synthesis of estradiol. The 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde (HNA) reacts with the chloride to form the sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfoxide. The HNA then reacts with triethylamine to form the carboxamide. The reaction between the carboxamide and ethylenediamine yields 3,17b-O-bis(methoxymethyl)estradiol. This process can be reversed by adding reagents such as chloroacetyl or dimethyl sulfoxide to form estradiol again.
