N-Boc-L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid is a drug that binds to the opioid receptor and has anorectic effects. The enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) catalyzes the conversion of glutamate to GABA, which is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. N-Boc-L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid inhibits this enzyme, thereby increasing glutamate levels. This increased level of glutamate increases the release of dopamine, which leads to increased appetite suppression. N-Boc L-azetidine 2 carboxylic acid has been shown to have an anti-obesity effect in animal models. In addition, it has been found to be effective in reducing weight gain and improving metabolic profiles in humans with type 2 diabetes.
