Description

6-Bromo-2-hexanone is an enolate that can be used for the synthesis of styrene derivatives, methyl ketones, and aliphatic epoxides. The catalytic activity of 6-bromo-2-hexanone is due to its ability to form a stable enolate under basic conditions. When 6-bromo-2-hexanone is reacted with styrene in the presence of base, an E1cB elimination occurs to yield a mixture of 2,6 dichlorobenzaldehyde and 4-(chloromethyl)styrene. The reaction with methyl ethyl ketone under similar conditions yields 2,6 dichlorobenzaldehyde and 2-(chloromethyl)methyl ethyl ketone. The reaction with acetoacetate in the presence of acid leads to the formation of 3-(chloromethyl)propanoic acid and 2,6 dichlorobenzaldehyde. This compound has been
