2-Bromo-3-phenylpropionic acid (2BPPA) is an inhibitor of the enzyme 2,3-dihydroxypropionate dehydrogenase. This enzyme is involved in the Krebs cycle and prevents the conversion of oxaloacetate to malate. This inhibition leads to a build up of oxaloacetate and an increase in citrate levels. Citrate is then converted to acetyl coenzyme A by ATP citrate lyase, which can be used for fatty acid synthesis or for the production of energy via aerobic respiration. 2BPPA has been shown to inhibit omapatrilat hydrolysis, which may lead to increased blood pressure and heart rate when combined with other drugs that also inhibit this enzyme.
