5-Bromophthalide is a reactive chemical that is used in the synthesis of phthalic acid. It is also used as an anticancer therapeutic drug, but has been found to be insoluble in water and unable to penetrate mammalian cells. 5-Bromophthalide can be prepared by reacting bromine with phthalic anhydride to form the monobrominated product. This reaction requires a grignard reagent and organic solvent. The industrial preparation of 5-bromophthalide involves the use of xylene as a solvent, which is then reacted with bromine gas at high temperatures.
