Product Information
Echinomycin is a chromophore that has antibacterial activity. It is derived from the bacterium Streptomyces echinosporus. Echinomycin is an inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis, which prevents the production of new proteins and causes cell death. The antibiotic effect of echinomycin is due to its ability to bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibit peptidyl transferase activity. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex with the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, which is required for protein synthesis.
