Description

Butenafine hydrochloride is a topical antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of fungi by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is an important component in the cell membrane. It also inhibits enzymes involved in protein synthesis and ribosomal RNA transcription, which are vital to cell division. This drug has been shown to be effective against Candida glabrata and other pathogens that cause infectious diseases. Butenafine hydrochloride is not active against bacteria or viruses. It has been used for the treatment of bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and polymyxin B-induced colitis in animal models. Butenafine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit inflammation in vitro through its effects on inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes.
