Description

6-Bromo-3-hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxamide (6BHPC) is a potential antiviral drug used in the treatment of HIV. It is a polymerase inhibitor that binds to viral DNA and inhibits the synthesis of viral proteins. 6BHPC has been shown to inhibit infectious virus particles in cell culture, as well as prevent the spread of infection by preventing the production of new viruses. This agent also has chlorination properties, which may be useful for disinfecting water supplies or treating wastewater. The mechanism of action for 6BHPC is not yet fully understood, but it may inhibit HIV by binding to the polymerase enzyme and blocking RNA synthesis and protein synthesis.
