1-Butanesulfonic acid is a sulfonamide that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It binds to the receptor site of bacteria and inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with protein synthesis. 1-Butanesulfonic acid has been shown to be active against a number of bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This drug has also been used as an absorption enhancer for compounds such as malonic acid and fatty acids in the preparation of samples for analytical techniques. It is also used in surface methodology to produce hydroxyl groups on siloxane surfaces.
