9,9-Bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)fluorene is a birefringent polyfluorene with a skeleton of inorganic hydrocarbons. It has an optical constant of 1.8 and birefringence of 0.2. This compound can be polymerized by cationic or radical mechanisms, with copolymers having either high or low molecular weights depending on the type of initiator used. Copolymers are also optically active, with one isomer showing birefringence of 0.2 and the other isomer showing birefringence of 0.012. 9,9-Bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)fluorene has a melting point between 100°C and 120°C and decomposes at temperatures above 250°C to form fluorine gas and carbon dioxide gas, which are both inorganic compounds.
