2-Bromo-1-(2,4,6-trimethyl-phenyl)-ethanone (BTME) is a reactive molecule with apoptotic activity. BTME has been shown to induce cancer cell death when used in vitro at low concentrations. The mechanism of BTME-mediated apoptosis appears to be related to the mitochondrial membrane potential and cellular physiological changes. BTME is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into bromotrifluoromethane and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol; it also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA. BTME induces morphological changes in cells that are resistant to chemotherapy treatment. These changes include reduced size, chromatin condensation, and formation of apoptotic bodies with condensed chromatin.
