4-tert-Butylbenzyl chloride is a fluorescence probe that reacts with the halides in a hydrolysis reaction. 4-tert-Butylbenzyl chloride is used to measure pH and has been shown to be an optimal pH indicator for reactions involving hydrochloric acid. It has been used as a reaction vessel for the synthesis of pyrazole rings. The reaction solution changes color from blue to yellow when 4-tert-Butylbenzyl chloride is added, which can be quantified by measuring the intensity of the fluorescence. This process can also be used to detect chloride ions, malic acid, and vinylene.
