5-Bromo-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid is a drug that is used to treat cancer. It has shown significant cytotoxicity against different types of cancer cells in vitro, including breast and prostate cancer cells. 5-Bromo-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid also inhibits the production of growth factors and induces cell death (apoptosis) in neuronal cells. This compound has been shown to have neuroprotective effects by inhibiting the release of glutamate and aspartate from neurons. 5-Bromo-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid binds to DNA at the site where the anticancer drug doxorubicin binds, but does not inhibit DNA synthesis or induce cell death as doxorubicin does.
