- 2(5H)-Furanone, 4-bromo-5-ethoxy-
4-Bromo-5-ethoxy-2(5H)-furanone is a diastereomer of 2-(4-bromo-2,6-diethoxyphenyl)acetonitrile. It can be prepared by coupling 4-bromoacetophenone with ethyl 2-(propenyl)pyridine in the presence of an organic base. The reaction yields the desired product in high yield with excellent stereoselectivity. The compound crystallizes from ethyl acetate as colorless needles that melt at 157-158 °C. NMR data indicates that the molecule has a trans orientation at C1 and cis at C2. Hydrogenation of the nitrile group affords 4-(4,6-dichlorobenzoyl)-2,6-dimethoxyphenol hydrochloride which is isolated as a white solid.
