4-Bromomethyl-2-chloro-1-methoxybenzene is an organic compound that is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other organic compounds. It is prepared by condensation of acetaldehyde with chloroform in the presence of ethyl chloroformate. This reaction can also be achieved using sodium sulfuryl chloride and aluminum chloride in a Friedel-Crafts type reaction. 4-Bromomethyl-2-chloro-1-methoxybenzene is then converted to bromomethyl 2,5,6,7,8,8a,9,10,11 - octahydroanthracenecarboxylic acid by reacting it with sulfuryl chloride followed by a cyclization reaction with ethanolamine. The final step in the synthesis is to react this intermediate with cytosine and hydrochloric acid in trichloroacetic acid solution at 120
