n-Butyl cinnamate is an antimicrobial agent that is produced by the reaction of butanol and phenolic acid. It has been shown to be effective against influenza virus, bacteria, and fungi. n-Butyl cinnamate inhibits cholesterol synthesis in a way similar to a statin drug by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This compound also has anti-infective properties due to its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The antimicrobial property may be due to the formation of reactive oxygen species and hydrogen peroxide when n-butyl cinnamate reacts with glutathione or lipid hydroperoxides.
