1-Butyl-4-ethynylbenzene (1BEB) is a tosylate that is used in organic synthesis. It is a polynuclear compound that has been shown to catalyze the alkylation of sodium methoxide with benzaldehyde, yielding 4-methylbenzenesulfonic acid methyl ester and sodium methoxide. 1BEB has also been used as a reagent for the preparation of phosphine ligands by reacting with phosphorus pentachloride or phosphorus oxychloride. 1BEB can be used as a precursor to produce luminescent materials such as bis(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)tosylate or bis(2,5-dimethoxybenzoyl)mesylate. The photophysical properties of this compound have been studied using diffraction and luminescence techniques.
