Description:

N,N-Bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-p-toluenesulfonamide is a synthetic chemical that is used as an intermediate in the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals. It is synthesized from xylene and water molecule by alkylation with dodecyl chloride to form a polyhedron. The polyhedron is then alkylated with thionyl chloride to produce the n-oxide of the molecule. This process is repeated until a multigram quantity of the desired product is obtained. The final step involves treatment with chlorine gas which produces N,N-bis-(2-chloroethyl)-p-toluenesulfonamide, which undergoes cyclen rearrangement to form N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-p-toluenesulfonamide.
