4-Bromo-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole is a benzothiadiazole derivative that has been synthesized as a fluorescent probe. It is able to bind selectively to amyloid fibrils in Alzheimer's disease patients, which are made up of a protein called beta-amyloid. This binding results in an increase in light emission and the molecule can be used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. 4-Bromo-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole can also be used as molecular probes for other applications such as the detection of bacteria or cancer cells.
