Butyl salicylate is a chemical compound that is an ester of salicylic acid. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators. This drug also has been shown to be cytotoxic against squamous carcinoma cells in cell culture and may be useful in the treatment of myeloma cells. Butyl salicylate is not as stable as aspirin because it reacts with magnesium salt and this reaction can lead to polymerization. The mechanism of action for butyl salicylate involves its conversion into p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which inhibits the activity of histone 3 acetyltransferase (H3 acetylation), preventing DNA transcription and protein synthesis.
