3',5'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)acetophenone is a synthetic chemical that belongs to the class of dyes. It is not commercially available and must be synthesized from acetophenone. 3',5'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)acetophenone has been used as an oxidation catalyst for the production of recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli. This compound also exhibits cationic surfactant properties and is often used as a polymerization agent in the synthesis of polymers. The trifluoromethyl group in 3',5'-bis(trifluoromethyl)acetophenone facilitates the reaction with diazonium salts, which are reactive intermediates in biochemistry, to produce a variety of polymers with different properties.
