Butylmalonic acid is a molecule with a hydroxyl group. It is also used as a cross-linking agent in the production of polymers, plastics, and resins. Butylmalonic acid can be synthesized from malonic acid or ethylmalonic acid by electrochemical reduction. The reaction mechanism involves an oxidation of the unsaturated alkyl to produce a carboxylic acid. Butylmalonic acid has been reported as a substrate film for use in high-resistance electrodes because of its high resistance to electrolyte solutions and its low cost. This compound is also used as a catalyst for reactions involving polycarboxylic acids.
