N-Benzylethylenediamine is a protonated amine that can be used as a ligand in organometallic chemistry. It is an isomeric mixture of two different compounds, N-benzylethylenediamine and N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine. The molecule consists of benzene rings with two ethylenediamine groups attached to it. This compound has been shown to have carcinogenic effects in animal models that are due to its ability to cause DNA damage. In addition, the molecular geometry of this compound has been determined by X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. N-Benzylethylenediamine has tetradentate coordination geometry and coordinates with four hydrogen atoms from four different molecules.
