4-Bromophenyl glyoxal hydrate is a reactive molecule that reacts with the amino and carboxyl groups of peptides to form covalent bonds. This modification prevents the peptide from binding to bacterial cells. 4-Bromophenyl glyoxal hydrate has been shown to inhibit the growth of Candida glabrata, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Streptomyces subtilis as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. It is also used as an antimicrobial agent in tissues and extracellular spaces.
