Fluorene is a planar, dihedral hydrocarbon with two double bonds. It has the molecular formula C20H10, and it exists in two isomeric forms: cis-fluorene and trans-fluorene. Fluorene is a volatile liquid that evaporates quickly at room temperature and can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It is also used as a solvent for dyes, oils, and waxes.
The cis-isomer of fluorene has the molecular formula C20H10, with a molecular weight of 152.2 g/mol. The trans-isomer has the same molecular formula but has a different configuration around one carbon atom and therefore has a different molecular weight of 154.2 g/mol.
