Benzaldehyde propylene glycol acetal is a potent inducer of the cytochrome P450 enzyme that metabolizes many drugs, including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and antipsychotics. Benzaldehyde propylene glycol acetal is used in the synthesis of caproic acid from dodecanol (2-dodecen-1-ol) and benzaldehyde. It has been shown to be an effective inducer of the cytochrome P450 enzyme in lung fibroblasts, and can be used to analyze the metabolic effects of other compounds on this enzyme class. Benzaldehyde propylene glycol acetal has a mass analyzer with a detection limit of 10 parts per billion or lower. The optimal reaction conditions for this compound are at 60 degrees Celsius for 15 hours with phosphotungstic acid and capric acid as catalysts. This compound has a carbonyl group with an ft-ir spectrum that peaks at 1710 cm-1.
