Butyl 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (BDPA) is a chitosan-based quaternary ammonium compound that exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria. BDPA can be used as an additive to microcapsules in order to improve their efficacy. BDPA inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the activities of protease and other enzymes. The chemical structure of BDPA is similar to that of the pesticide carbaryl, which has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity in humans and animals. This inhibition may occur through competitive inhibition or through covalent binding to the enzyme's active site. The action mechanism is not yet known, but it may involve the activation of a fatty acid such as linoleic acid by an esterification reaction.
