1,4-Benzenedithiol is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect disulfide bonds in proteins. The fluorescence of 1,4-benzenedithiol changes when it binds to the disulfide bond and binds to the protein. This compound has a redox potential of -0.11 V and is soluble in water and organic solvents. It is also insoluble in polymer matrices such as polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) or agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE), which makes it useful for sample preparation. 1,4-Benzenedithiol has been shown to bind to human serum albumin and transport properties in vitro. It can be detected with high sensitivity using light emission at 450 nm and spectroscopic data at lower frequencies than the typical 400-800 nm range for most fluorophores. 1,4-Benzenedithiol is commercially available as a dye that emits green light
