Description

Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)disulfide is a gold nanoparticle that has been shown to have high efficacy in treating cancer cells. It has been observed to be effective against cancer cells with a linear polymer coating, but not against those with a coatings of disulfides. The drug is biodegradable and can be used as a model system for the study of cell membranes. Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)disulfide also has an antibacterial effect on bacterial cells, which may be due to its ability to oxidize methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cells and their membrane lipids.
