The compound Boc-Cys-OH is a cyclic peptide that has been shown to inhibit the growth of human prostate cancer cells in culture. It does this by binding to amines, phosphine, and fatty acids, which are necessary for cell division and growth. The Boc-Cys-OH molecule also blocks the synthesis of DNA and RNA by inhibiting the enzyme RNA polymerase II. This compound is synthesized from two amino acids, cysteine and tyrosine. In addition to its anti-cancer properties, Boc-Cys-OH has also been shown to have antimicrobial effects on bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
