4-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline is a chlorinated quinoline that is used as a fungicide. It inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to sterically sensitive sites on the fungal cell wall, which blocks the synthesis of ergosterol and causes leakage of cellular contents. 4-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline has been shown to be synergistic with the antifungal agent potassium bicarbonate. This compound also exhibits toxicant properties in mammals, causing liver necrosis and renal failure at high doses, although it does not cause cancer. 4-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline binds to DNA in a manner analogous to other quinoline derivatives and has been shown to have antifungal activity against Mucorales, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Penicillium species.
