The compound biadamantylidene is a trifluoromethyl radical that can be used to detect the presence of hydroxyl groups. The detection sensitivity of biadamantylidene is determined by steric interactions with the substrate, which causes the formation of a cationic surfactant. This surfactant can then react with an electron-deficient bromonium ion to form a dioxetane, which emits light upon irradiation with ultraviolet light. These reactions are part of chemiluminescent assay and have been used as model systems to study transfer reactions.
