It has been shown to bind to the bromodomain in the human protein BRD4, which is involved in gene transcription and protein synthesis. This compound has also been shown to have a significant inhibitory effect on cellular growth and proliferation at exposure levels that are below those necessary to induce cytotoxicity. 4-Bromo-2-methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one is a member of a family of compounds that target the bromodomain and are being investigated as anticancer agents for tumors that overexpress BRD4, such as breast cancer or prostate cancer.
