Bergenin pentaacetate is a natural compound found in the plant Aesculifolia. It is a sesquiterpene lactone with a hydroxy group at C-5, which can inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in human liver cancer cells. Bergenin pentaacetate has low bioavailability and cannot be used orally because it is poorly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. This compound has been shown to have anticancer activity against human liver cancer cells, but not other types of cancer. Bergenin pentaacetate inhibits cell growth by inhibiting protein synthesis and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells through a hydroxyl group on C-5.
