1-Benzothiophen-3(2H)-one is a hexamethylenetetramine that has shown antibacterial activity. It is an active methylene with light exposure. When the compound is heated, it undergoes thermal isomerization to form the cis and trans isomers. The compound fluoresces when exposed to light and has been shown to have antifungal properties in vitro. 1-Benzothiophen-3(2H)-one also reacts with fatty acids to form esters, which confer its viscosity and ability to inhibit bacterial growth. This compound may be used as a functional theory for other molecules, such as fatty acids and phospholipids.
