Bis(2-nitrophenyl)diselenide is an antimicrobial agent that is used in the process optimization of selenium compounds. It has been shown to inhibit peroxidases and peroxide, which are enzymes that are involved in cellular respiration. Bis(2-nitrophenyl)diselenide also has a high fluorescence when it reacts with β-unsaturated aldehydes. This reaction can be measured using fluorescence spectrometry techniques. The reaction time for the hydrogen bond between Bis(2-nitrophenyl)diselenide and β-unsaturated aldehyde is about 10 minutes at room temperature. X-ray absorption spectroscopy can also be used to measure the amount of selenium in this compound, which is typically less than 0.5%.
