Boc-D-methionine is a hydroxamic acid that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial methionine aminopeptidase. It also acts as a dopamine analog and has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of proteins in striatal membranes. Boc-D-methionine is synthesized by the reaction between D-methionine and chloromethyl methyl ether, which is followed by removal of the Boc group with hydrogen gas in methanol. The sulfurs are then removed from the molecule, leaving a dry weight of around 300 grams per mole.
