Z-O-benzyl-L-tyrosine is a tetrapeptide that has been used for conformational studies. It is also a potential drug candidate for the treatment of intestinal disorders. This drug has an ethylene functional group, which may allow it to cross the intestinal barrier. Z-O-benzyl-L-tyrosine's amide group may be able to form hydrogen bonds with the intestinal wall, enabling it to enter into the intestine and have an effect on neuroendocrinology and other systems in the body. The chloromethyl ketone is a synthetic analog of this drug that has been used in experiments with rats. This analog was shown to increase chloride ion influx into cells by activating chloride channels, which led to increased levels of intracellular calcium ions.
