Description

Boc-4-fluoro-L-phenylalanine (Boc-4FA) is a prodrug of the amino acid phenylalanine. It is administered intravenously and is metabolized in vivo to phenylalanine, which is then transported across the blood brain barrier. Boc-4FA has been shown to be clinically useful in treating type 2 diabetes by increasing glycogen phosphorylase activity, which stimulates glycogen breakdown and increases glucose production. The conjugates of Boc-4FA are cholic acid and taurocholic acid, which can be detected in plasma. Boc-4FA has also been shown to have pharmacological effects such as an increase in muscle mass and an inhibition of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells.
