Benzoyl-L-alanine is a prodrug of benzoyl-L-tyrosine. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme trypsin and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Benzoyl-L-alanine has been used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, as well as cisplatin nephrotoxicity in rats. The mechanism of action of this drug is thought to be related to its ability to inhibit the activity of histamine N-methyltransferase, which is involved in the biosynthesis of histamine. This drug can also be found in soybean trypsin, which is used for the treatment of bowel disease.
