S-tert-Butylthio-L-cysteine (BTTC) is a model protein that has been crosslinked with albumin to form a copolymer. The copolymer was then ring-opened with glycol and encapsulated with disulfide bonds. These interactions have been shown to have a significant effect on the fluorescence intensity of BTTC, which can be used as an indicator for the degree of crosslinking. BTTC has also been shown to interact with ethylene glycol and fluorescein, which may allow for studies in biomaterials.
