O-tert-Butyl-L-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride (OBT) is a substrate of an enzyme called peptidyl-tRNA synthetase. It discriminates between the two amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine, and is regiospecifically derived from a. flavus. The biosynthesis of OBT involves cyclopiazonic acid, which is synthesized from phenylalanine, propanedioic acid, and ATP. OBT has been shown to be present in fungal species such as Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium notatum. This molecule also has a n-terminal tetramic acid structure, which distinguishes it from other compounds in this class.
